Our directors are often asked to speak and participate at a range of industry conferences. We also host regular seminars to ensure our clients are kept apprised of the latest trends and regulatory developments in South Africa's legal framework.
Employment Law
Seminar Overview:
Significant criticism has been levelled by trade unions and certain politicians against labour broking, with it being equated to slavery, prompting calls for a complete ban on the practice. After much robust public, business, trade union and government debate, and developments in neighbouring countries, the Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has since expressed the view that he would no longer ban temporary employment services, but would seek to regulate the industry stringently.
Werksmans hosted a seminar which provided attendees with practical insights into the anticipated changes to the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Employment Equity Act, which will alter the practice of labour broking as we know it in South Africa. They also commented on the recent views expressed by the Labour Court in this regard.
Topics addressed included:
- Key regulatory developments in relation to labour broking
- Legislation impacting labour broking and the implications thereof
- Anticipated future regulatory changes
- Recommended best practice for labour brokers in relation to complying with the legislation
